Two Hands, One Leg: Bargue Plates 11 & 28

Bringing this round of my Intro to Pencil Drawing class at Studio Incamminati to a close, Katya Held had me focus on hands and limbs for my last two homework assignments, similarly to the end of the first round of the class. The critiques this time around were much better, citing that the gesture of the hands in plate 11 and the proportions of the leg in plate 28 showed much improvement. There is, of course, always room for improvement, but it’s encouraging to hear there is observable progress.

Some things that were noticeably in need of improvement were the height of the thigh in plate 20; I seemed to have thinned it out a bit. Also in plate 28, the perspective on the right side of the base on which the leg is posed is not correct – on the far right side of the base, the two lines should be converging toward the same vanishing point, but they’re not. Perspective will be one of the things that haunt me moving forward; I’m a bit intimidated by it and will need to overcome that.

Not as many critiques for plate 11, other than the length of the forearm for the bottom drawing could be longer, and other minor things like that. I am feeling more confident approaching this level of the plates, and I’m looking forward to continuing the process of sharpening my eye and improving my skills with the Bargue studies and more complex plates and drawings.
