Reclining Figure – Charcoal on Paper

I don’t have very much experience with reclining models. And the little experience I do have with them, hasn’t produced very good results. Tonight’s one hour pose at The Plastic Club in Philadelphia was a reclining pose. Using charcoal allowed me to concentrate on the gesture, and, overall, I was somewhat pleased with the outcome.

As I have mentioned previously, my outlines are still too thick. I watch many other skilled artists who work in charcoal, and instead of outlining the figure, just use the broad side of the charcoal to draw the form shadow shapes on the model, and the cast shadows around him or her. The beautiful results they achieve are wonderful. Because I concentrate so much on the outlines, I can tell the shading or tonal values are completely wrong. This is something I will obviously continue to work to improve.
