After a brief exploration into painting, I realized that I still have a lot of work to do with understanding composition, form, gesture, proportion, value, and perspective. The painting class confirmed for me that pencil and charcoal drawing are still the best mediums for me to use as I work on those things. Plus, I am still just more fascinated with drawing; how a single piece of charcoal or graphite can create a powerful image with a broad range of values between the darkest dark and the lightest light.
We are now exactly six months into the COVID lockdown, and schools or studios are still closed. So, there is still no opportunity to draw from life, but Croquis Cafe has a vast library of model reference photos, and I stumbled across this beautiful pose while searching through the library recently.
I was intrigued with the peaceful, calm mood of the pose, and I thought the unusual gesture would be an interesting challenge. I also sleep similar to the way the model is posed, with what I call my “hug pillow”, so I felt the pose had some personal significance to me as well.
I enjoyed this study because, first, it was a return to the medium which is still my favorite: pencil. Second, I genuinely feel I’m getting more comfortable with indicating the structure of the form and proportion. I also feel more confident with indicating the details of the face, hands, and feet, not so much with lines, but through shadows and values.
