At a recent open studio held by The Philadelphia Sketch Club, the moderator, Vince Docktor, suggested I work with a larger sketch pad. Until tonight, I had been sketching with a 9”x12” pad, or something similar. Vince sited my height and the size of my hands when he suggested a larger pad would help free up my movements and allow me to concentrate more on form and gesture. Taking his advice, I purchased a 14”x17” pad and tried for the first time tonight.
I’ll admit that working on the larger pad was helpful, particularly when trying to work on an easel. However, I once again got lost in the details. I spent a great amount of time working on her face, but in the end, there wasn’t much of a likeness to the model. I tried working on the details of her left hand as well, with pretty poor results. I was happy with the line and shading work on the chaise lounge and the pillow, but in retrospect, I should have spent more time correcting proportions, particularly that of her right lower leg in relation to her right thigh.
This was also my first time drawing blonde hair. I’m happy with how her hair turned out, and the shading on her body is a little more refined.
