First Sketch of the Year

Writer's picture: Joe CalivaJoe Caliva

We’re already four days into 2019. At my first open studio session of the year, I tried graphite pencil instead of the charcoal pencils I normally prefer at these types of workshops. Also, I didn’t really make any resolutions artistically, but tonight I did decide to focus on not adding too much detail, and just concentrate on getting to a likeness of the model with minimal lines and very loose shading. It helped to have a model with a very defined figure. I think the minimalist approach also worked well for the blonde hair – any more lines or shading would have given the impression of a darker hair color. Still much work to be done, but happy how this year has started, and looking forward to what it will bring.
