I had the pleasure recently of drawing this fantastic model, who professionally goes by the name Vex Voir. With great muscle tone and very strong poses, the initial block-in of the drawing seemed somewhat easier than usual. I’ve found that the more extreme the lines and the more unusual the pose, the easier time I have capturing the gesture. It’s the normal, every-day standing, sitting, or reclining poses that seem the most difficult to accurately capture.
In any case, this was a one-hour pose, started on August 9, 2019 at The Plastic Club in Philadelphia and I finished the shading over the following week. I found it to be a good exercise in form shadows, and I was particularly happy with her hair. Representing highlights and shadows in hair has been a bit of a challenge, but with this exercise, I feel as though I’m starting to grasp the technique.
I’m always secretly happy when details of hands aren’t that visible – less struggle for me. But, I’m happy with the small details in the hands. Her right foot, however, didn’t turn out as accurate as I had hoped. I think it is pretty accurate proportionally, but it looks a little flat; I didn’t shade it correctly to represent the plains of the foot and make it look more dimensional. That will definitely be something I observe more closely in the future.
