I’ve been watching several artists do quick gesture or croquis drawings using only abstract shapes – circles, squares, cones, etc. Then, if time allows, putting in details once the figure is blocked-in and proportionate. I tried that with these sketches and was happy with the results. Reducing the human figure down to the most basic of shapes does help to capture the overall structure and gesture.
These were 2-5 minute poses, so I was able to experiment with finer lines in the musculature of the male model. In the female model sketch, you can see the use of the “bean” shape for the upper and lower torso.
